Sam Johnson news: January - June, 1998

Sam rocks by the sea

The first Sunday in June found Sam at his first outdoor festival, the Fiesta del Sol in Solana Beach. This annual seaside fiesta treated Sam to his first live music. A reggae band played, so Sam also got to smell the crowd's obligatory ganja. (Mom whisked Sam over to a shady spot beneath the Kong-sized inflatable Bud can, and told him to just say no.) Along with the general liveliness of the scene, Sam was taken with the many San Diegans who seem to be vying to become as tatooed as Queequeg.

Exactly four months into his life, Mom trundled Sam off to the doctor for a meeting with the scale, yardstick, and syringe. Sam weighed in at 16 pounds 2 ounces, and a strapping 27 inches tall.

Just when Sam thought he'd get off as easy as a catch-and-release trout, the Doc whipped out the big guns and gave him four inoculations. According to Melinda, Sam responded unfavorably. He cried so hard that "his face contorted and his tongue quivered like a reed in the wind, but no sound came out." Fortunately, two Rugrats Band Aids and a nap mollified the patient.

Sam gets a Web site

Yup, you're looking at it. The grom gets digitized. Melinda, Sam's Mom, said that "friends and relatives kept asking for pictures of Sam. Rather than continue to clog the e-mail waves with jpgs, I told Sam's Dad to get on the ball and build a site." Here it is.

Though he's only been around for a few months, Samuel is racking up frequent flyer miles. He's already flown to San Jose and San Francisco. While in The City, Sam also got to hit some fine dining establishments—luckily for the other diners, Sam brought his own milk tanks with him.

Another trip brought Sam to a conference in Santa Barbara (Dad went to the conference, Sam just had fun at UCSB). On the same trip, Sam visited his pal Caleb in Ojai, California. Caleb is the son of Sherrie and John McNeil.

Developmental milestones

Hands in the mouth? No problem! Sam snacks on his thumb, fingers, and anything else he can get into his dainty maw. He first discovered hand to mouth existence during a trip up to Grandma Wendling's house in San Jose the first week of April 1998.

On the same trip, Sam flipped from his tummy (prone on elbows) to his back. Probably had more to do with gravity than true skill, but hey, we'll take it.

Sam has been athletic from the start. In contrast to his head, which he held pretty steady by eight weeks old, Sam's body is king wiggler. At 16 weeks, he plays on his tummy and holds his head up better than ninety degrees. He bats, grabs, and manipulates objects, but hasn't yet mastered letting go.

Sam is peripatetic. He scoots across the floor on his back by pushing with his feet. He keeps Mom guessing where he'll end up in his crib—soon enough he'll be lunging for the lamp cords.
